Siaan Ka'an: Truly, A Piece Of Heaven

“Sian Ka´an” (door to heaven). Mayans could not have found a better name to describe the magnificent beauty of this ecological reserve of approximately 1.3 million acres in size. This Piece of Heaven was declared in 1987 a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Just a few people have the opportunity to visit this well named godsend place on earth. This reserve is located in Quintana Roo, Mexico and covers an area shared by two municipalities, Felipe Carrillo Puerto and Tulum. These lands are part of the Yucatan Peninsula and are flat, mainly of limestone, which prevents the formation of large water surfaces, so here you can find many famous “cenotes,” deep water wells that often are connected to each other.

Sian Ka’an is the largest marine natural protected area in Mexico. It is also the most beautiful natural treasure of the Yucatan peninsula that is accessible to tourists, even though the access is not for mass tourism and just a few tour operators can provide a guided tour.
