Isla Mujeres is a prime piece of land that makes up part of the vast natural richness of the Mexican Caribbean. In this tropical territory, you will find breathtaking turquoise waters, white sand beaches, archaeological remains of the ancient Mayan civilization and marine parks with lush vegetation, reefs and an endless variety of fish.
The island’s story begins in the years from 564 and 1516 AD, as a Mayan province that was part of the current state of Quintana Roo. It was used only for the worship of the goddess of happiness, Ixchel. In 1517 the Spaniard Francisco Fernandez de Cordoba discovered the territory with a sanctuary full of female figures; for this reason it is now called “Isla Mujeres“.
Little by little the island’s population grew to 561 people in total at the end of the nineteenth century. At that time the urban, agricultural livestock and fishery areas were already defined. Starting in the year 1902 when Porfirio Diaz created the state of Quintana Roo, the island became one of the official municipalities.
The anniversary of its founding is celebrated on August 17th each year; the festive and creative parties are held in the Central Plaza in front of the glow of the Caribbean Sea.
