When listing the features of the Riviera Maya, the first one that comes to mind is the color of its seas; that turquoise blue that anyone could fall in love with.
Perfect for divers and snorkelers, the destination offers thousands of reasons to venture into the depths and enjoy incredible visual spectacles. If you’re looking for an unforgettable experience, I recommend these 8 Places to Take an Underwater Tour in the Riviera Maya.
Underwater Art Museum
This museum is an attraction you can’t miss in the Riviera Maya. Over 500 sculptures, made of special cement that helps with reef formation, were placed just a few meters off the coast of Isla Mujeres in a 420-meter area.
Sunken Ship in Puerto Morelos and Cancún
A scene out of a movie; war ships that sunk in the Waters of Puerto Morelos and Cancun have become home to multiple marine species. As you discover the hidden corners of the boats, you’ll observe colorful fish swimming around you.
Akumal
Located 105 kilometers from Cancun, Akumal is a municipality of Tulum, known as the “The land of the turtles”. Here you can swim, snorkel and dive alongside sea turtles.
Cenotes
Taj Mahal: Just 25 kilometers south of Playa del Carmen, this cenote is formed by four interconnecting cenotes; open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 pm.
Dos Ojos: With its two connecting cenotes, Dos Ojos resembles two eyes when viewed from above. It is found north of Tulum and is part of the third-longest underground river in the world.
El Cielo
In Cozumel, you’ll find El Cielo…yes, something that seems out of reach is possible here. Its white sands and turquoise sea make it possible to see a bank of starfish in the depths. This is one of my favorite places.
Bacalar
Explore the seven colors of its lagoon from the depths. Here there are wells you can dive in and you’ll also find the cenote Azul. To get there you’ll need to drive 35 kilometers south of Chetumal.
Holbox
This island is 10 kilometers off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. In addition to clear waters that are perfect for diving, from May to October you can also swim with whale sharks.
Reef Parks
The following three parks form part of the Great Reef Belt of the Western Atlantic, the second longest barrier reef in the world.
National Reef Park of Puerto Morelos
National Western Park of Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancun and Punta Nizuc
National Reef Park of Cozumel
