Almost a decade away from our first trip to Grand Velas

Almost a decade away from our first trip to Grand Velas

It feels like a couple of years away from the day I discovered Grand Velas in the Riviera Maya just by chance. I was visiting some friends in Playacar, that nice residential and hotel area in Playa del Carmen, when we passed in front of that immense entrance and one of them commented: “This is the new best hotel in Playa del Carmen.”

I always go behind of what my friends and family recommend, so I could not avoid to book a few, but unforgettable, days in Grand Velas at the end of that year: 2009.

To say that I was surprised by this property may not do justice to the wonderful moments I spent together with my family; It was a matter of trespassing that entrance and walking along the path through the jungle that leads to the lobby, to start falling in love with this hotel. It was impossible not to do so: they welcomed us as if they had been waiting for us forever and took care of every detail for our joy and comfort. No need to make an extra effort for anything, there was our caring and attentive Personal Concierge to take care of everything else –and I had only had the chance to experience this kind of service at a hotel in Vienna.

The atmosphere is so intimate and soft that you are brought to the present moment to absorb every sight, every smell and every flavor. Food by the way, is extraordinary and the service delivered by people who work there is unmatched. The beauty of the hotel seems to merge with nature around.

The hotel has three different sections, two facing the sea and one in the middle of the jungle; this last one is the ambiance we chose to feel completely embraced by the spirit of relaxation and harmony that can be breathed. The suite was a small private paradise with jacuzzi, local art which I simply adore and super comfortable beds.

Our kids –now a couple of teenagers– could not have had a better time, they spent more time in the kids’ club than with us because they were enjoying fun activities all day long. That gave us some time to visit the Spa, and I assure you that there is no other Spa more beautiful than that one.

Now that Grand Velas is about to celebrate its 10th Anniversary, and we know first hand from friends and family that it has not only maintained the quality we discovered, but improved it, we will return soon to continue the love story we once started with this hotel.
