The first event in 2006 took place in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, with participation from various Mexican states, South America and Europe. Its overwhelming success motivated the organizers to continue the project.
A few of the categories of competition are: animation, experimental, documentary, fiction and silent films.
The official selection of competitors will consist of more than 40 productions from Mexico, Argentina, Spain, the United Kingdom, Israel, the United States, Chile and Germany among others; in addition to short films, there will be a film workshop, full-length film presentations, conferences and music recitals.

The festival seeks to provide a meeting place for creators of audiovisual productions, specialists and the general public. Within this international forum creators can exhibit their short films, experts can express their opinions and the public can become acquainted with important aspects of cinematography.
The Riviera Maya Underground Film Festival is an interesting event for cinema lovers and a great way to experience international film culture.
