Riviera Maya Posadas in Cancun & Playa del Carmen – Christmas Festivals

A Latin American holiday tradition, posadas are Christmas festivals that feature a dramatic retelling of Joseph and Mary’s search for lodging. Find local posadas near our hotel in Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

From December 16 through 24, you’ll encounter nightly posadas – holiday processions – in numerous places up and down the coast of Playa del Carmen. For centuries, these evening processions have recreated the pilgrimage of Mary and Joseph on their way to Bethlehem as they looked for lodging, or posadas. Two people dress up as Mary and Joseph, in search of an inn, and are followed by fellow pilgrims, children, and musicians. They knock on doors along the way but are denied lodging, as the story goes. The crowd grows throughout the night and finally reaches a church, where mass is held. After the service, children often break open piñatas and the procession may conclude with a feast. Posadas vary from region to region, and every one is a little bit different.
