Welcoming a New Era with the Pyramid of Positive Thinking

Xavier de Maria y Campos, an artist attempting to raise awareness of environmental protection, has always had an inclination towards pyramids and predictions about what would happen on December 21st, 2012. This long-standing interest has led him to create a kind of tribute to the Mayan civilization.
 
He effectively turned the prediction of the “end of the world” on its head with his Pyramid of Positive Thinking. The project consisted of people depositing a plastic bottle in a pyramid, holding a positive message directed at the new cycle of humanity. The activity was conducted in Tulum, and was sponsored by the Zama Village; a community that promotes the commercial and residential development of the entire region.
 
Constructed of a metal lattice and alternating layers of bottles and mud mixed with seeds from the area, the pyramid was 12 meters wide and 12 meters tall. It had the capacity to hold 700,000 bottles holding positive messages, turning it into a “hill of wishes”. At its crown a structure of plates was placed to project the sun’s rays during the day and artificial light at night.
 
December 21st was the end of the 13th Baktun; the end of an era, and the beginning of the rebirth of the human spirit. This artistic creation was and will remain an opportunity to cultivate hope, good wishes and kindness in society.
